E R M E S I N D E

Sur le territoire de Clairefontaine, petit village belge tout près de la frontière luxembourgeoise, se trouve le tombeau de la Comtesse d’Ermesinde. Cette Dame est considérée comme ayant été la « Première Luxembourgeoise » et les historiens sont d’accord qu’en son temps, elle a grandement influencé le devenir du Grand-Duché.
En ce début du troisième millénaire, Ermesinde est de nouveau l’initiatrice d’un évènement d’une importance capitale.
L’ annonce du nouveau développement se trouve dans le testament de la Comtesse, qui prévoyait de son vivant la création d’un nouveau pays libre sur le site de ses propres agissements.
Ce développement prit son départ quand Ermesinde choisit son exécuteur en la personne deJerry Frantz. Elle se présenta à lui dans un songe et lui raconta son mécontentement sur l’état pitoyable du monde moderne. Elle se plaigna des dictatures de tous genres, fussent-elles produites par l’égoisme politique, par le règne de l’argent, ou tout simplement par la sottise dangereuse de certains êtres humains et de leurs adeptes.
Ermesinde ordonna donc à son représentant de mettre tout en œuvre afin de réussir ce nouvel état qui serait le garant de la liberté absolue de la pensée humaine et bien évidemment garant de toutes les possibilités d’expression de celle-ci.
Jerry Frantz hésita évidemment avant d’assumer une telle responsabilité ; il craigna (vu les développements historiques bien connus ) la prolifération de pensées nuisibles si l’expression de toutes les opinions était permise.
Ermesinde le rassura en affirmant qu’en une ambiance de liberté absolue, des théories nuisibles qui se manifesteraient seraient sans aucun doute réduites à néant par la dynamique de tous les autres membres du nouvel état qui agiraient en concordance avec les principes de la liberté absolue de la pensée.
Et Jerry Frantz se mit au travail.
Sous la guidance d’Ermesinde, et en collaboration avec tous les compagnes de lutte, furent élaborés les principes de fonctionnement de la République libre de Clairefontaine. Ceux-ci seront retenus dans la constitution.
Voici les points les plus importants garantissant l’épanouissement de tous les Clairefontenois :
∑ La République se considère comme étant le centre du monde.
∑ Le site propre de Clairefontaine est actuellement occupé par un groupement qui ne veut acceuillir d’ état libre sur se terres. Afin d’éviter toutes actions hostiles , ce qui serait contraire à sa philosophie pacifiste, le gouvernement se déclare en exile. Le siège du gouvernement se trouvera dans le local de l’ancienne laiterie à Beckerich.
∑ Chaque individu, sans prendre en compte sa provenance, peut devenir citoyen clairefontenois , ceci moyennant l’acquisition du passeport. A côte de leur nouvelle citoyenneté, les Clairefontenois auront la possibilité de garder leur citoyenneté d’origine. La double ou même triple nationnalité ne posera aucun problème.
∑ La République se donne des attributs visibles : son drapeau, son armoirie, son hymne national auront comme but de rappeler le principe suprême de sa philosophie de liberté de pensée et d’expression.

Vu la situation difficile causée par l’exile, le gouvernement se déplacera avec ses attributs et son bureau de passeports mobile. Il représentera la République libre de Clairefontaine lors de manifestations culturelles et politiques et se déplacera en visite d’état.
Il aura comme mission de recruter et de former les plus d’individus possibles à ses fins tout en respectant ses principes de liberté garantie à chacun.

Sur initiative d’Ermesinde, grande dame du 12e siècle, sera ainsi garantie au 21e siècle la liberté absolue d'esprit au profit de l’humanité entière.

La république libre de Clairefontaine est autre chose qu'un projet artistique déjanté de plus dans la mare des événements culturels qui nous submerge en ce moment. Elle se veut une vraie institution.
Que l'on se réprésente devant son oeil intérieur l'image suivante: la nature idyllique wallonne, un chêne centenaire, sinon millénaire, les murs nus d'un ancien cloître tombé en désuétude et au milieu de tout cela un homme, barbu aux cheveux courts et aux lunettes rondes. Il s'est assoupi sous l'arbre qu'on vient d'évoquer, ses yeux sont plissés, fermés à moitié. Quiconque passerait devant ce scénario, serait amené d'y voir un défoncé de plus - certes hors de l'âge de faire des choses de ce genre - mais un peu déjanté quand-même. Pourtant, cet homme a une vision. Et pas n'importe laquelle.

En ces temps de rédecouverte du mysticisme, c'est une femme qui lui appararaît. Certes pas la Sainte Vierge, ce qui ne serait point original, vu qu'elle apparaît régulièrement aux quatre coins du monde, mais une autre figure historique, plus jeune. Enfin, de 1186 ans la cadette de Marie de Bethléem: la comtesse Ermesinde. Er comme toutes les apparitions, elle a pour vocation de confier une mission à celui qui la voit. Cela dit, faire une apparition surnaturelle juste pour demander l'heure serait un peu abusé.

"Elle parlait d'une voix douce mais amère. Ermesinde se plaignait de l'état du monde, des dictatures, des guerres et de la connerie humaine en général", raconte Jerry Frantz, toujours comme illuminé de l'intérieur lorsqu'il évoque cette scène qui - on l'imagine - a durablement changé le cours de sa vie. Catastrophée par comment vont les choses sur ses anciennes terres - qu'elle s'était employée à garder intactes tout au long de sa vie, en acceptant même de se remarier moult fois - et surtout par le fait que son corps ne repose plus au Luxembourg, mais en Belgique, Ermesinde a demandé à Jerry Frantz de fonder une république libre à Clairefontaine. Un Etat résolument pacifiste se considèrant comme le centre du monde et destiné à changer le cours de l'histoire de l'humanité: la république libre de Clairefontaine était née ce jour-là.

Et Jerry Frantz se mit au travail. D'abord il fallait trouver des gens pour peupler cette république. Ce qui fût vite fait, grâce aux nombreux contacts de Frantz dans la scène artistique luxembourgeoise, à laquelle il appartient d'ailleurs aussi. Et puis les difficultés ont commencé: comment faire accepter à l'Etat belge qu'une nouvelle république libre allait se fonder sur son territoire, surtout que cet Etat a déjà assez de problèmes avec ses séparatistes de tout bord? Finalement, le gouvernement de la république libre de Clairefontaine à dû s'exiler à Beckerich - un village luxembourgeois paisible non loin de la frontière belge.

Président à vie

C'est là, dans une ancienne laiterie, que se trouve le palais de la nouvelle république, en exil bien entendu. Mais cela n'a pas découragé Jerry Frantz et ses nombreuses combattant-e-s. Il faut dire que le gouvernement compte à ce jour dans les 25 ministres - qui ont des ressorts aussi importants que le "ministère des loisirs" qui revient à Enrico Lunghi, le directeur artistique du Casino Luxembourg, tandis que le directeur administratif du même Casino, Jo Kox, occupe le poste de "ministre des finances futures" (rappelons que la république libre de Clairefontaine, faute de citoyens qui paient des impôts, n'a pas encore de revenus). Un autre exemple est Danièle Igniti qui a pris en mains le "ministère des échanges de fluides corporels". La liste complète des minstères et des ministres, nominé-e-s à vie bien sûr, sera publiée sur le site internet, qui ne devrait pas tarder à être mis en ligne dans les jours qui viennent ...

Provocation ciblée

Mais sinon, la république libre de Clairefontaine dispose de tous les atouts dont un "vrai" Etat a besoin: passeports, drapeau (très important ces jours-ci), insignes, hymne national (une chanson grivoise conçue par Jean Portante) et une constitution. Quand même, la république libre de Clairefontaine ne songe pas à demander son adhésion à l'Union Européenne: "Nous nous considérons comme le centre du monde, nous n'avons donc pas besoin d'entrer dans l'UE. Par contre elle peut - si elle le veut bien - adhérer à notre république", explique doctement Jerry Frantz, par ailleurs président à vie du nouvel Etat. L'Otan et l'Onu ne seraient d'ailleurs pas intéressants pour eux, car - comme on vient de l'indiquer - la république est pacifiste avant tout. Ce qui dérange un peu l'observateur, c'est le fait que le président et ses ministres soient élus à vie. N'est-ce pas un peu autocratique sur les bords? - "Non", explique M. le Président," celui qui veut prendre le pouvoir doit le faire de manière artistique et, s'il réussit, il sera nommé ministre des coups d'Etat".

En fin de compte, c'est une façon comme une autre pour mener à bien la gestion de conflits à l'intérieur d'une structure qui se veut démocratique, comme ne le cesse de répéter M. le Président.

Stop! Jusqu'ici tout va bien. Mais en continuant cette description pastiche, le lecteur serait amené à penser que tout ce concept d'Etat dans l'Etat serait une foutaise factice, commise par quelques membres select de la scène artistique s'ennuyant à mort dans leurs bureaux et qui chercheraient avant tout à s'amuser un peu sur les frais du ministère de la culture (luxembourgeois, bien entendu). Ce n'est pas le cas dans l'absolu. "Certes, notre concept peut paraître absurde. Mais s'il l'est, tous les concepts d'Etat le sont autant", explicite Jerry Frantz. Et d'attirer l'attention sur les couleurs du drapeau: le rouge et le noir. Non pas Stendhal, mais les anarchistes. "Nous ne voulons pas plonger le grand-duché dans l'anarchie. Nous voulons juste questionner la condition et l'existence même d'un Etat. S'il y a provocation, c'est pour voir un peu comment les gens et les autorités réagissent si on met en question devant leurs yeux l'existence de l'Etat même. Celui auquel ils paient leurs impôts et pour lequel, certains au moins, sont prêts à donner leur vie". La république sera donc inaugurée le 5 mai en grandes pompes devant la laiterie de Beckerich, avec présentation de l'hymne et du drapeau, invité-e-s officiel-le-s et allocution présidentielle. Ensuite la fête continuera à l'intérieur du bâtiment, redécoré pour l'occasion comme palais de la république libre de Clairefontaine. Des installations et des expositions ainsi que des concerts y auront lieu tout au courant de l'année. Mais tout comme le Luxembourg ne se limite pas au palais grand-ducal, la république libre de Clairefontaine se doit - faute de territoire - d'être moblie. Ainsi, elle sera présente aussi lors de la fête nationale, le 23 juin, avec drapeaux et bureau de passeports mobile, afin de recruter des citoyen-ne-s. "Nous ne voulons pas nous arrêter le premier janvier 2008," proclame Jerry Frantz, "cette république est un projet en développement durable et nous comptons l'agrandir au fil des ans. Tout ceci n'est qu'un début. Et tous ceux et celles qui veulent réaliser un projet intéressant sont les bienvenu-e-s sur notre petite î le. D'ailleurs nous planifions aussi nos premières visites d'Etat, surtout dans des petits Etats libres et artistiques, comme le Sealand - une î le occupée depuis des dizaines d'années au milieu de la Tamise".

Quoi qu'il en soit, le plus important pour la république libre de Clairefontaine, précise son fondateur: "c'est que l'art se détourne enfin de ses prérogatives esthétiques et redevienne politique".

Der Legende nach sieht und hört die Gräfin ERMESINDE, während eines Aufenthaltes auf ihrem Landgut von Clairefontaine, die Jungfrau Maria, die sie bittet, dort eine Abtei zu bauen.
Die Abtei Notre-Dame von Clairefontaine war somit geboren und sollte mehr als ein Jahrhundert lang, nach Vorbild des Heiligen Denis, die Nekropole des Prestigehauses von Luxemburg werden.
Ironie des Schicksals, die Gräfin Ermesinde, Gründerin von Luxemburg, liegt heute auf fremden Territorium begraben, denn unter dem Druck eines Hüttenbesitzers wurde Clairefontaine 1839 an Belgien abgetreten.

Clairefontaine, l’Abbaye.
C’est au XIIIème siècle, lors d’un séjour dans son paisible domaine de Clairefontaine que, selon la légende, la Comtesse Ermesinde aurait vu et entendu la Vierge Marie lui demander d’y construire une abbaye. L’Abbaye Noble des Dames de Notre Dame de Clairefontaine était née et allait devenir pendant plus d’un siècle, à l’instar de Saint Denis pour les Rois de France, la nécropole de la prestigieuse Maison de Luxembourg. Ironie de l’histoire, la Comtesse Ermesinde, fondatrice du Luxembourg, repose aujourd’hui en terre étrangère. En effet, Clairefontaine, sous les pressions d’un maître des forges, fut cédée à la Belgique en 1839.

Der Besucher sieht dort eine Abtei und eine Kapelle aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, die von Jesuiten erbaut wurde und wo die Statue von Notre-Dame de Clairefontaine und das Grab der Gräfin Ermesinde in der Krypta liegt.
Dort befindet sich auch die heilige Quelle von Saint-Bernard.

Als ein Kind der Politik eines solchen Vaters wird Ermesinde nach einjähriger Verlobung dem mächtigen Grafen der Champagne zugewiesen, der die Ländereien beschützt. Aber der Graf stirbt bei einem Kreuzzug in Jerusalem und Ermesinde wird vor ihrer Heirat schon zur Witfrau. Schnell findet man für sie einen neuen Bräutigam, Thiébaut, Graf des Bar. Er ist vierzig Jahre alt, sie elf. Aus dieser Ehe entstammen vier Kinder wo eines nur überlebt.
1214 wird Ermesinde zum zweiten mal Witfrau und um ihre Besitztümer zu bewahren, muss sie sobald wie möglich heiraten. Sie wählt Waléran, Lehnsherr von Monschau in der Eifel. Sein Vater ist der Herzog von Limburg und Markgraf von Arlon. Diese Heirat ist für Beide gut, denn Waléran, als einfacher Lehnsherr über Monschau wird ebenfalls Lehnherr von Arlon und darf den Titel des Grafen von Luxemburg tragen. Ermesinde sieht sich so in seinem Schutz. Durch diese Heirat dehnt sich das Territorium zu einem kompakten Gebiet von der Mosel bis zur Ourthe aus.
1226 wird Ermesinde erneut Witfrau. Mit vierzig entschließt sie sich, nicht mehr zu heiraten und übt eigenmächtig die Herrschaft als Gräfin von Luxemburg bis zu ihrem Tode im Jahre 1247 aus. Die zwanzig Jahre ihrer Herrschaft wurden für Luxemburg eine Zeit des Friedens und der inneren Stärkung. Dank ihrer Politik ist sie in die Geschichte als die zweite Staatsgründerin Luxemburgs aufgetreten, denn sie gibt dem Fürstentum Luxemburg alle Voraussetzungen zur Entwicklung hin zu einem modernen Staat.
Zuerst allein und später mit ihrem Sohn regiert sie das Land. Sie wird verehrt, beschützt die Klöster, verteidigt ihre Rechte und führt eine Politik der Befreiung von Lehndiensten und Staatslasten, indem sie den Städten Echternach (1236), Thionville (1239) und Luxemburg (1244)Freibriefe ausstellt.
Sie gründet ebenfalls einige Klöster wie die von Bonnevoie, Differdange und vor allem Clairefontaine, wo sie noch heute begraben ist.
Und wie die Ironie des Schicksals es so will, die Gräfin Ermesinde, Gründerin des modernen Staates Luxemburg, liegt auf fremden Boden, denn ein Hüttenbesitzer tritt 1839 das Gelände von Clairefontaine an Belgien ab.

Ermesinde, enfant de la politique
C’est en juillet 1186 que la petite Ermesinde voit le jour. Neuf mois plus tôt, son père Henri l’Aveugle, Comte de Namur et de Luxembourg a décidé de reprendre sa femme qu’il avait répudiée quatorze ans plus tôt. Âgé de septante-deux ans, il veut en effet un héritier direct pour conserver toutes ses possessions intactes. Enfant de la politique de son père, Ermesinde se voit fiancée à un an à peine au puissant Comte de Champagne qui protègera ses terres. Mais celui-ci part en croisade à Jérusalem où il meurt. Voilà notre Ermesinde veuve avant d’être mariée ! Qu’à cela ne tienne, on lui trouve un nouvel époux, ce sera Thiébaut, Comte de Bar. Il a quarante ans, elle, onze. Ils auront quatre enfants dont une seule survivra.
En 1214, Ermesinde est veuve. Pour préserver ses possessions, elle doit absolument se remarier au plus vite. Elle choisit Waléran, seigneur de Montjoie dans l’Eifel. Son père est duc de Limbourg et marquis d’Arlon. Cette union profite aux deux époux puisque Waléran, de simple seigneur accède au titre de Comte de Luxembourg et de marquis d’Arlon tandis qu’Ermesinde est à nouveau protégée. Grâce à ce mariage, le territoire luxembourgeois va s’étendre en un bloc compact de la Moselle à l’Ourthe.
En 1226, Ermesinde est une nouvelle fois veuve. Elle a quarante ans et décide de ne plus se remarier. Dès ce moment, elle exerce personnellement le pouvoir comtal jusqu’à sa mort survenue en 1247. Les vingt années de son règne furent pour le Luxembourg une période de paix et de consolidation intérieure. Grâce à sa politique, Ermesinde est entrée dans l’histoire comme la seconde fondatrice du Luxembourg car elle va donner à la principauté de Luxembourg tous les fondements solides qui la mèneront vers l’état moderne.
Ermesinde assure seule puis avec son fils la direction de son pays : elle reçoit les hommages, assure la protection des monastères, défend ses droits et mène une politique d’affranchissement en octroyant des lettres de franchise à Echternach (en 1236), à Thionville (en 1239) et à Luxembourg (en 1244). Elle fonde aussi plusieurs couvents : ceux de Bonnevoie et de Differdange par exemple mais surtout celui de Clairefontaine où elle repose encore aujourd’hui. Car, ironie de l’histoire, la Comtesse Ermesinde, fondatrice du Luxembourg moderne, repose aujourd’hui en terre étrangère. En effet, Clairefontaine, sous les pressions d’un maître des forges fut cédée à la Belgique en 1839.

Blogger Ruan Yifeng reposted these photos on his blog with the comment, "I saw these photos in an Internet forum. Amazing. They are all very authentic and quite reflective of our abnormal society."

But to see the photos as a realistic reflection or criticism of social morbidity is not the only angle to appreciate them; take a closer look, you may find these photos do resemble a mystery/detective movie.

Like many interesting posts that circulate on the Internet in China, this gallery is unattributed. Shorn of context, the photos may even lead viewers to wonder whether the creator is trying to exploit the viral nature of Internet posts to promote a new movie (or book). Ruan points out similarities to a set of images featuring western models, also in a low-end motel room, but does not provide an artist's name for that set, either.

Before turning off our lights for one hour from 8.30 to 9.30 pm for the earthour day 2009tomorrow, have a look on the lightful IMAGINE PEACE TOWER.

IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is an outdoor work of art conceived by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon.
It is situated on Viey Island in Reykjavík, Iceland , powered entirely by Geothermal Energy.

The artwork was dedicated to John by Yoko at its unveiling on 9 Oct 2007, Lennon’s 67th birthday.
IMAGINE PEACE TOWER symbolizes Lennon’s and Ono’s continuing campaign for World Peace,
which began in the 1960s, was sealed by their marriage in 1969 and will continue forever.

IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is currently only illuminated on the following dates:

The words IMAGINE PEACE are inscribed on the Well in 24 different languages.

IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is composed of a tall shimmering tower of light that will
appear every year and be visible from October 9th (John’s birthday) until
December 8th (the anniversary of his death).

In addition, the Tower will illuminate from Winter Solstice (December 21st - 28th),
on New Year’s Eve (December 31st) and the first week of spring (March 21st -28th).
It is lit from 2 hours after sunset until midnight, and until dawn on New Year’s Day.

One of the mesmerising features of the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is that the strength,
intensity and brilliance of its light continually changes with the prevailing weather and
atmospheric conditions unique to Iceland - creating a clear pillar of light on a cloudless
night, beams irridescing with rainbow refractions in rain or snowfall, and brilliantly
reflecting off and through any moving layers of cloud.

The electricity for the light is generated entirely naturally - geothermally, from hot
water - at the Hellishei_i Geothermal Power Plant. This was one of the reasons for
situating the artwork in Iceland.

IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is closely connected to Yoko’s interactive artwork
WISH TREE (1981). The Wish Tree has been integral to many of Yoko’s exhibitions
around the world in museums and cultural centers where people have been invited to
write their personal wishes for peace and tie them to a tree branch.

Yoko has collected all the wishes - currently totalling over 750 thousand.

On the map of the Earth planet, Iceland is a country situated in the northern
most part of our world. It is an ideal location from which to cover the Earth
with enlightenment and love.

Iceland is a magical and beautiful country. The electrical energy source for the
country and for the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is geothermal - water, instead
of oil. No pollution. No war. This is just one of the incredible situations that
creates the magic of Iceland.

Right now, light is what the world so desperately needs, since, in varying
degrees, we all live in darkness of fear and confusion of the polluted world.

This column of light in Iceland will not be extinguished. It is the eternal flame
we send out to the world and the universe to give light and warmth, and the hope
and conviction that our dreams can come true.

I hope the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER will give light to the strong wishes of
World Peace from all corners of the planet and give encouragement, inspiration
and a sense of solidarity in a world now filled with fear and confusion.

Let us come together to realize a peaceful world.

It was over 40 years ago when I conceived this idea of a LIGHT HOUSE made of light,
and listed it in my Conceptual Sales List.

Two hundred copies of which were sent out to people who followed my artworks.

In 1967, John Lennon invited me for lunch at his Kenwood residence in England.
It was about six months after we first met in my Indica Gallery Show in London.
He told me that he read about the Light House in my publication and if I would build
one for him in his garden.

“Oh, that was a conceptual light house! I’m convinced that one day, it could be built,
but I don’t know how to do it.” I said with a laugh.

“Oh, I thought the Americans had come up with something” was what he said.
And that was that.

I still marvel at the fact that John was touched by that particular concept in my
catalogue, and 40 years ago at that!

In 1967, for my Lisson Gallery show in London, I re-wrote the concept more succinctly.
This was the way I should have expressed the idea to John in Kenwood, instead of
laughing it off.

The light house is a phantom house that is built by sheer light.
You set up prisms at a certain time of day, under a certain evening light which goes
through the prisms, the light house appears in the middle of the field like an image,
except that, with this image, you can actually go inside if you wanted to. The light
house may not emerge every day, just as the sun doesn’t shine every day.

Around the cylindrical Wishing Well, which is the frame for the column of light,
there is a platform faced with three types of native Icelandic stone - hyalite,
dolerite and basalt- in a striped mosaic pattern. At the centre of the platform the
light emerges from a cylindrical Wishing Well, 4m in diameter and 2m high.

On October 9th, the day for the unveiling day for the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER,
people around the world were asked to join together to create a circle of peace.

for the unveiling of IMAGINE PEACE TOWER.
They say, if all the people in China were to jump up and down at the same time,
the axis of the globe would shift.
Well, we are here together.
Billions of us.
Standing at the dawn of a new age determined to shift the axis of the world to health,
peace and joy by loving and caring for all lives on Earth.

Some of us are here physically, some are joining us in spirit.
Some of us are imprisoned, tortured, maimed and silenced, but they are also here today with us.
Some of us have passed away before being able to enjoy a new age of love and peace.
But we are all here today standing together with hope.

The light is the light of wisdom, healing and empowerment.
Even in the moments of confusion, fear and the darkness of your souls, hold the light
in your hearts, and you will know that you are not alone, that we are all together in
seeing the light of peace.

I thank the people of Iceland, for having given so much love to this tower from its inception.
IMAGINE PEACE TOWER was visualized with love, and realized by love.
It is a gift from John and Yoko and the people of Iceland to the world.

The Ig Nobel Prizes are a parody of the Nobel Prizes and are given each year in early October for ten achievements that "first make people laugh, and then make them think." Organized by the scientific humor magazine Annals of Improbable Research (AIR), they are presented by a group that includes genuine Nobel Laureates at a ceremony at Harvard University's Sanders Theater.
The first Ig Nobels were awarded in 1991, at that time for discoveries "that cannot, or should not, be reproduced." Ten prizes are awarded each year in many categories, including the Nobel Prize categories of physics, chemistry, physiology/medicine, literature, and peace, but also other categories such as public health, engineering, biology, and interdisciplinary research. The name is a play on the word ignoble.

The 2008 Ig Nobel Prizes were awarded on Thursday night, October 2, at the 18th First Annual Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony, at Harvard's Sanders Theatre.

NUTRITION PRIZE. Massimiliano Zampini of the University of Trento, Italy and Charles Spence of Oxford University, UK, for electronically modifying the sound of a potato chip to make the person chewing the chip believe it to be crisper and fresher than it really is.

PEACE PRIZE. The Swiss Federal Ethics Committee on Non-Human Biotechnology (ECNH) and the citizens of Switzerland for adopting the legal principle that plants have dignity.

ARCHAEOLOGY PRIZE. Astolfo G. Mello Araujo and José Carlos Marcelino of Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, for measuring how the course of history, or at least the contents of an archaeological dig site, can be scrambled by the actions of a live armadillo.

BIOLOGY PRIZE. Marie-Christine Cadiergues, Christel Joubert, and Michel Franc of Ecole Nationale Veterinaire de Toulouse, France for discovering that the fleas that live on a dog can jump higher than the fleas that live on a cat.

MEDICINE PRIZE. Dan Ariely of Duke University (USA), Rebecca L. Waber of MIT (USA), Baba Shiv of Stanford University (USA), and Ziv Carmon of INSEAD (Singapore) for demonstrating that high-priced fake medicine is more effective than low-priced fake medicine..

COGNITIVE SCIENCE PRIZE. ECONOMICS PRIZE. Geoffrey Miller, Joshua Tybur and Brent Jordan of the University of New Mexico, USA, for discovering that professional lap dancers earn higher tips when they are ovulating.

PHYSICS PRIZE. Dorian Raymer of the Ocean Observatories Initiative at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, USA, and Douglas Smith of the University of California, San Diego, USA, for proving mathematically that heaps of string or hair or almost anything else will inevitably tangle themselves up in knots.

PEACE: The Air Force Wright Laboratory, Dayton, Ohio, USA, for instigating research & development on a chemical weapon -- the so-called "gay bomb" -- that will make enemy soldiers become sexually irresistible to each other.

NUTRITION: Brian Wansink of Cornell University, for exploring the seemingly boundless appetites of human beings, by feeding them with a self-refilling, bottomless bowl of soup.

ECONOMICS: Kuo Cheng Hsieh, of Taichung, Taiwan, for patenting a device, in the year 2001, that catches bank robbers by dropping a net over them.

AVIATION: Patricia V. Agostino, Santiago A. Plano and Diego A. Golombek of Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, Argentina, for their discovery that Viagra aids jetlag recovery in hamsters.

WHO ATTENDED THE IG NOBEL CEREMONY: Lal Bihari overcame the handicap of being dead, and managed to obtain a passport from the Indian government so that he could travel to Harvard to accept his Prize. However, the U.S. government refused to allow him into the country. His friend Madhu Kapoor therefore came to the Ig Nobel Ceremony and accepted the Prize on behalf of Lal Bihari. Several weeks later, the Prize was presented to Lal Bihari himself in a special ceremony in India. of Chile's gross national product. Davila's relentless achievement

The Southern Baptist Church of Alabama, mathematical measurers of
morality, for their county-by-county estimate of how many Alabama
